Unlike the scam artists at the local VW dealerships, Bob will go out of his way to save you money on the repair without compromising quality. For example, he'll give you an honest assessment of whether you can get by with an aftermarket part for a particular repair, or whether you should go with the genuine VW part. His labor rates are also about 40% less than what the dealership charges. I've had him do some pretty major jobs (e.g. replacing my A/C compressor) and have been thoroughly satisfied with his work.
Currently run by the son of the original owner, Bob's Auto has apparently been repairing Volkswagens for about as long as the brand has been imported into the US. They know these cars like nobody else. I've been taking my 2001 Beetle to him for a couple of years now, and won't consider taking it to another shop anymore.
The only downside is that the shop is not in a pretty location. It's tucked into an industrial building next to the railroad yard, with a tiny sign on the side, and when you walk in you're standing in a dusty parts storage room that opens directly onto the repair bays. If that really bothers you, just remind yourself how much money you're saving, and how much more competent the repairs on your car will be compared to the dealership.

I have taken all of my VW's and Audi's there for general service and aftermarket upgrades. Professional service and fair pricing. Great alternative from the dealership. It's hard to find such a stand up shop that specializes in German cars.
I've been going to Bob's off and on since I started driving. They are absolutely the best auto repair shop around. I've driven back from NYC and Boston when my car needed work, because I know I can trust what they say. Bob tries to keep your car repair costs low, but he'll also tell you if a cheap repair using an aftermarket part is just going to cause more problems in the long run. No matter how many questions I have, Bob always takes the time to explain even the most complicated problems. Car repairs are never fun, but having a shop you can rely on makes a big difference. I've had other places try to scare me into unnecessary work because they think I won't know any better. I do. If I can drive my car to Bob's, it's always my first choice.
